Used Dental Apron – No Answers Yet

Two days ago I’ve wrote about how awesome it feels to have those dental x-ray lead aprons draped over you in the chair.  Many of you responded and said you felt exactly the same.  Others said that I’m a weirdo with a major personality disorder.  And even a few questioned why we call dentists Doctor.  I mean, they didn’t go to medical school, right?

Actually, I have no idea.  And I ain’t Googling!

Then, yesterday I found a gross old lead apron being sold on Ebay.  Apparently it was owned by a Dr. Wang, which is hilarious in and of itself.  Wang.

This doesn't any less gross than yesterday.

I emailed the seller and asked two questions…

  • How many  millimeters  thick is the lead shield?
  • What kind of stains?

The seller responded today.  By the way, before I get into that, I better explain the first question.  The weight of the apron was not listed in the description, and I could basically figure it out knowing the thickness of lead.  I saw a little conversion online.

Here was the seller’s response.  Interestingly, he was able to answer both in one sentence.

He doesn’t know what kind of stains?  Or how thick the lead is?  Not worth a quick eyeball glance estimate?

Well, from here I can see what I would suspect might have been a woman who was spotting.  Not sure how she was able to soil the outside of the apron.  Also, about half an inch thick.  Just a guess.

The order will be placed tomorrow.  I must have this.

I completely understand your need for this. Why have I never thought to buy one of those! I also have SPD, so I’m very jealous! Hopefully the stains aren’t too bad.

@BitingLife  Do you have certain textures that freak you out?  For me it’s cotton balls and  corduroy.

@delfinparis  Hmm, that’s weird! I don’t have a problem with either of those textures. Wearing socks on carpet (or seeing other people wear socks on carpet) is a big one. And sitting in cars that don’t have leather seats. Terrycloth isn’t my favorite either. There are so many, though!
