I’m trying my hand at this manifesting thing.
I’ve been into New Agey crap for twenty years. Most of it is BS but I’ve always found spiritual practices entertaining. Back when I was nineteen I was introduced to the idea of chakras. Whether they’re real or not (probably not) I can still feel all seven of them simply by putting my attention on those areas of the body. Which to me, if they’re not real, is even more amazing. That the mind is so powerful that one can create feelings in certain spots of one’s physical being.
For years I’ve read about the Law of Attraction which has been popular ever since The Secret hit. This was a best-selling book that millions embraced because it introduced the idea of daydreaming. Yes, you can have what you want by merely thinking of it! Of course, the real world doesn’t work that way. You need to bust your ass to get what you want.
Or do you?
I’m currently reading a book on manifesting. I won’t mention the name, but all these types of books are pretty much the same. They claim there’s a force in the universe that, when you align yourself with, will bring into reality that which you desire.
The easiest way to defeat this philosophy is to think of all the starving people in the world. Maybe they just didn’t think about food hard enough! Clearly nonsense. However…
What if it is possible to attract certain things just by thinking about them?
In this book you’re supposed to put your attention on what you want (the author said to pick something small that you believe is possible but unlikely to happen) and give it a due date of forty-eight hours. You’re to literally command the universe to produce your wish within two days.
I like bossing things around so I figured I’d give it a try. Nothing to lose really.
I won’t mention what I’m attempting to manifest but it is objectively verifiable. In two days I’ll either have this thing or not. One of the points of manifesting, the author states, is that you have to believe that receiving the item is possible. I’m putting aside all logic and reason and changing my belief system for the next few days.
In my experience to bring something into the world requires hard work and discipline.
But then again, I have also had unusual circumstances where things I wanted just showed up.
In an earlier exercise from the book I attempted to manifest that a brand would contact me to do a promotion. Brands rarely reach out to me – it’s not a common occurrence. Two brands tweeted out to me within the next day. Weird. But could also be coincidental.
The worst thing that could happen with this exercise is that I don’t end up with what I didn’t have anyway. Should that occur, I’ll get back to my normal way of manifesting. Putting my head down and working diligently for a long period of time.
But if it does work I’m going to milk this manifesting thing for all I can get. Riches, fame, fortune? Already on the list.
Also, if the universe was really cool it would hook me up with chiseled abs without me having to do any sit-ups.
I COMMAND THEE!

Hmmm, perhaps I can manifest some clients! Or does that fall under “meddling with the free will of others”, which would probably produce some sort of karmic (if you believe in karma) backlash?
Will you post pictures if you end up with lady abs of steel?
Actually, the 48 hour thing for manifesting some new clients would work really well for me…I can start immediately, but 48 hours is a nice bit of prep time. If you get really good at manifesting, can you manifest a quicker manifesting time?
Hope you get your abs… and who knows, maybe some company that makes some ab-crunching device will contact you… would that qualify? Either way, good luck!

Funny… I’ve been exploring the same thing (secretly, because it all seems so new age and ridiculous when I try to explain it) and then I read your post. Well written. It’s funny but summed up everything without sounding silly. Thanks.

Hi DJ! I do believe in the power of manifestation. I’ve never tried an exercise of doing it within 48 hours so maybe I can start with some small things but something that would still be a bit of a challenge.
I want to manifest some chiseled abs as well. This is my 3rd week straight of working out at least 5 to 6 days each week by going to a boot camp class at my gym so I hope to get some abs one way or another. Great post!

Hi DJ…Now manifesting an awesome body without the physical work, that would be something. I have often wondered if that’s possible, so let me know how you get on with that one. I too have been interested in the law of attraction for a while now. I think there’s been some essential part of the process missed out, just don’t know what it is. Having said that, I’ve actually had a lot of success in consciously manifesting things, and what I found was not being too specific seems to make it easier. Although I suppose it’s then easier to put it down to coincidence that way too. For instance, we have been staying in a friend’s house while she was on holiday, being technically homeless at the moment. I put the wish out there that I wanted to be out of here by the time she came back, without knowing how on earth that would happen, both of us being jobless and as I said, technically and temporarily without a home of our own. And what happened? Without applying or looking for a job, my partner’s been offered a really good job in another part of the country. When does it start? Monday. And we have to be out of my friend’s house this weekend. Perfect timing. Not quite what I had in mind (jobs and a house here where my friend lives was what I hoped for) but nevertheless I got exactly what I asked for…to be out and earning money by this weekend. So I think being less rigid in what I was desiring created the space for something I couldn’t have even imagined to appear. Cool! good luck with manifesting your desires. Be interesting to see how you get on. Cheers. Andrea

Hmmm, I’m a little leary of manipulating forces in the universe. I’ll stick with hard work and praying God’s will be done. 🙂

I’ve been able to manifest a few things in my life. But, I have to wonder if those things would have happened anyway. I do, however, believe that things happen for a reason. People come into your life for a specific purpose – although the reason isn’t exactly clear at that moment. It’s happening to me right now… so I’m keeping a keen eye on the situation to see why the Universe/God has brought this person into my life. Eydie 🙂

Hehee, Paris, let me know how this works for you. I’m with Barbara: I pray for God’s blessing and then I work my tail off. Definitely do a Part II on this post: did “the Universe” meet your expectation? If you are hoping that a great pie recipe will be manifested, then you’ve got your wish: click on my link below. 😉

This was a really interesting read!
I do believe in the power of manifestation 🙂

Very interesting. I believe in the power of words, not necessarily that the universe will give me whatever I believe it will. Although nothing comes just by saying it over and over again, ( I don’t believe in luck or coincidences). I’m a planner so whatever I want my life to be like, for instance if I wanted a new car, I say it, believe it and keep thinking about it. I certainly don’t expect a car to fall from the sky, but in whatever way the car does appear, I keep believing that it will. It’s just better to be positive than negative. But you’re right: nothing comes to us without hard work. Some people sit around and wait for things to appear instead of getting up and doing something. I really don’t believe I can get what I desire in 48 hours just by willing it, but I will try it. Let us know what happens to you. Hope it’s good news 🙂

It’s been a full week, and you were allotting two days.
Soooo… do you have it?!
